At wildlife refuges, supplemental food like carrots are sometimes given as treats while manatees are nursed back to health. This species is typically found in shallow coastal areas and rivers, where they feed on seagrass, mangrove leaves, and algae. Manatees will munch on food for almost half the day, eating up to ten percent of their body weight in plant mass daily. With weights of up to 1,200 pounds, that is a whole lot of food!
