In honor of mental health day- this great woman Nellie Bly infiltrated an American insane asylum by “staying up all night to give herself the wide-eyed look of a disturbed woman” and then getting herself arrested by the police. They didn’t know she was an undercover journalist and would publish an expose about the corruption of the mental institution called 10 Days In A Mad House, forcing them and many other wards to implement lasting reforms, by reporting their brutality and neglect to the world. Having grown up with a close family member suffering from schizophrenia and bi polar, prone to violence towards me and paranoia towards the world, I appreciate the importance of this day and recommend everyone seek help who sees the early symptoms- and perhaps a more empathic society combined with meditation, sobriety and self analysis/therapy can avoid late stage symptoms all together if you’re lucky. 🖤
