These women - my mother, my aunt, my grandmother, the women in the neighborhood - were very much a part of my journey and my awakening. I saw this generation of women before me have all their hopes and dreams dashed, ripped up like my aunt Gracie’s photographs. I saw all these women, the lady across the yard, my mother, her sister, my grandmother, who had no shot, who didn’t go to college, the girl who was twelve years old and pregnant with a kid who everyone passed by. All of these stories moved me to make a change in any way I could. And I’m sure I changed things in just a little way, but it was something. Today is #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild.
