Slash-and-burn is often used to clear the land for farming or ranching—nearly all fires can be attributed either to humans or exceptionally dry land, caused by climate change. This creates a vicious cycle, as burning trees means losing the most effective way to capture carbon from the atmosphere while emitting an enormous amount of CO2.
This picture, in the heart of the Amazon, is for me a reminder of how we should join forces and find solutions to survive on our planet sustainably. The Amazon rainforest is a place that most inspired me at the beginning of my career; today I think it should inspire everyone to take a step in the right direction, toward taking care of our fragile environment.
