Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto | Having left the thick fog swirling around Mount Etna, an explorer descends into the misty subsurface. Grotta del Gelo is a lava tube that formed following the cooling of a lava flow during an eruption that began in July 1614—and lasted for over 10 years. Her headlamp cuts through the cloud, revealing a reflective, crystal clear lake on top of a large mass of ice. Grotta del Gelo is unusual; finding lava tubes with ice inside is a rarity. Huge thanks for the support from the Sicilian Speleogical Fédération and Etna National Park for making this trip happen.
