I have been an independent small retailer for the better part of 22 years. My first shop was in downtown NYC pre Barneys Co-op ... so imagine Barneys was strictly couture brands and pretty inaccessible for most. Our shop specialized in curating, and then supporting young designers ... all of whom were then working for the Ralph, Tommys, and Gaps of the world. Within the next few years Barneys picked up on the trend, shopped our store for inspiration, and slowly started carrying the best of our brands. The designers were happy because they could leave their day jobs and live out their dream due to all the big orders. It made all our hard work, that was taken by a big retailer, OK because we were seeing our friends succeed. I have opened many stores and launched many brands in my stores over the years, and have seen many friends become wealthy working with Barneys. But I also have seen many talented designers get hustled for discounts, returns, and the likes from this same place; putting them out of business or close to it. Not to mention the independent retailers this affected. The #saveBarneys campaign brings up mixed feelings for me.. what are people actually saving? When is the last time we discovered a new brand at Barneys? The landscape of retail has changed.. I have come to terms with that and am evolving myself (stay tuned 🎉) . Maybe it’s time to move on people..look to the future not the past
