Hussein and Suaad Ahmad live in Doha, Qatar — their new home after fleeing Raqqa, Syria and the chaos and violence of the Syrian war. They have six adult children who have ended up scattered across Europe and the Middle East as their family tried to find ways to rebuild their lives. The Ahmads are comparatively lucky — their nuclear family all escaped Syria safely — but I could feel very viscerally just how stressful it was for both of them to not know exactly where all of their children were in the world, and whether they were safe.
