The area receives only 11 inches of precipitation each year and is the quietest U.S. national park in the 48 contiguous states. Sand temperatures can reach a blistering 140°F during hot summer days, and the dunes are up to 750 feet high. The park also contains the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with six peaks over 13,000 feet.
