The Chevelle would often languish in the garage, sometimes on blocks, as he saved up to get a part he needed or an upgrade he wanted. The front seats swiveled, which was magical to us. I think this is where I saw him at his happiest—in his garage, sliding around under a car, or elbow deep in the engine, grease under his nails, the right tool for the job always at hand, inadequate heater clattering in the cold months, solving riddles.
