I’d been fired from my position as morning zoo sidekick at a top-40 station in Tucson, Arizona and somehow managed to parlay that into an unspecified role working for Kevin and Bean at the World Famous KROQ. I’d met them once months earlier. The program director (Kevin Weatherly) was a college friend. He thought I was funny and felt I could help strengthen his morning show. He wanted me to meet the guys, so I went to Marshall’s, bought a new shirt and flew to Burbank. My interview began like this: Bean: So you’re an adult man who goes by “Jimmy”? Me: Am I being asked this question by an adult man named Bean? The interview went OK, but I returned home and was forgotten by both Kevin and Bean the moment I boarded my America West flight back to Tucson. Knowing I was about to be fired, I spent the next few weeks badgering the KROQ general manager (Trip Reeb) by phone, until he gave up and hired me to be part of the morning show. For reasons still unknown, Trip neglected to share this information with the hosts of the morning show. When I showed up for work Monday morning, ecstatic to be there and eager to make a strong impression, the first words I heard were “they hired you?” I suddenly felt very sick, realizing that I’d moved my family and everything we owned to a strange city to work for a couple of guys who didn’t even know I was coming. After that first show, we convened in our tiny office and I played them my demo tape. They nodded, but didn’t laugh. I knew I had my work cut out for me. I started wearing shorts every day. I pitched them dozens, if not hundreds of ridiculous ideas. They liked some of them. They even seemed to like me.
