I became an Athlete Ally Ambassador four years ago because I believe everyone should be able to play the sport that they love or work in the job they love without being discriminated against. Sport is such an important part of my life, Sport brings people together and I would have been devastated if I ever had to choose between being proud of who I am and playing soccer. No one should ever have to make that choice. We need to cultivate a culture of empathy and kindness. And I think athletes can play a huge role in this by inspiring their teammates and fans to do the same. There are some who may tell us to “stick to sports.” But that’s impossible, because sports don’t exist in a silo. We can’t talk about sports without also talking about homophobia, transphobia, sexism and racism. These issues follow us through every moment of every day, and don’t fade once we step on the playing field. We need to listen to one another, and be allies to one another.
