The people of Saudi Arabia have shown me their generosity and hospitality, and while doing so, constantly displaying the pride that they take in their country and religion.

I arrived here with many preconceived notions of what the city and the people would be like, especially with the undercurrent of the political rivalry happening between our countries leaders and citizens.

Some friends asked me if I was sure I wanted to post this photo in the Ghutra headdress as it may offend people in America and elsewhere abroad given the current government tension and sociopolitical differences.
*
But the more time I spend with the locals in Riyadh the more I’m reminded that we’re all the same species of people, and we just believe in different stories.
*
As such, I came to recognize a vibrant, loving, happy and hard working culture who eats a lot, plays loud music, dances late into the night, loves their children and smiles to greet strangers with tea and fresh dates. So I wanted to wear their traditional dress to hopefully feel a little bit closer, because we’re all the same humans.

Also I didn’t tell my mom I was coming so if you could keep that going for me that would be rad. She worries a lot.
