Even before that, he had been at the forefront of the battle to save the Amazon rainforest from industrialization and deforestation. He has met with world leaders, and raised his voice in defense of Kayapó lands against the building of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, which forced thousands of indigenous people out of their homes when it became operational in 2016. He spoke up again in the wake of fires raging in the Amazon in a Guardian article: "We, the peoples of the Amazon, are full of fear. Soon you will be too." Indigenous people have a direct line to Earth's operating system. We would be wise to pay attention to his words.
