This unique beauty allowed the timeliness of a culture so deep in tradition to be raw, real and truthful. The Holga speaks in this ephemeral nature how time is not really real. There were challenges using a Holga…light leaks, only 12 frames per roll, the slow methodology in changing film, all in movement of near meditation. When spiritual events like this man, deep in trance trying to stab himself during the cleansing ritual known as, Melasti, everything moved so quickly. There was only the ability to make one photograph, knowing that all the history before, all the history to come, would never repeat. I’ve witnessed numerous Melasti’s while living in Bali and never have I seen anyone draw blood or hurt themselves, no matter how hard the pointed Kirs (a dagger-like sword) was pushed into skin.
