There were 69000 new HIV infections in young women and girls, aged 15 to 24, in South Africa last year with new HIV infections growing fastest among young women and adolescent girls, who are 3 times as likely to contract HIV than their male peers. According to UNAIDS women who have experienced violence are 50% more likely to be living with HIV in South Africa. There were 52,420 sexual offences reported in South Africa in the past year, of which 41,583 were rapes. South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world and this epidemic is driving new HIV infections. This all sounds hopeless but organisations like the AIDS Healthcare Foundation are fighting to end this and the Shethority community can help by making sure this crisis gets the attention it deserves.
