In fact this is the first image of this behaviour that I’ve even bothered processing, even though it was taken somewhere between 2010-2012. Unfortunately I was always a bit of a numpty when it came to setting the date and time on my camera so the camera data says that it was taken in 2006. It wasn’t. The reason that I’ve never even bothered processing it is because there feels to me just something inherently naff about the image, so let me explain why. At the time I was leading winter wildlife workshops for my good mate @peter_cairns_photography at his home in the Scottish Highlands. One of the guests that week told me that he hoped to capture an image of the visiting squirrels jumping between branches but in my head I saw that as overly optimistic. Nevertheless, that night I started pondering the possibility and I soon realised that it was in fact incredibly easy to create such an opportunity. The squirrels at this site were visiting for nuts everyday anyway and so all I needed was to erect a take-off and landing point exactly equidistant from the hide. Although initially hesitant about me interfering with his set-up Pete agreed and I set to work, a job that took all of about 20 minutes before the squirrels came leaping into action. At the time this was the first commercial set-up for capturing this particular aspect of their arboreal athleticism but soon similar opportunities were popping up everywhere. It was I guess the contrived nature of the image that I was never truly comfortable with and why, until some 7-8 years later, I’d never even bothered processing a single image from those few days. If nothing else though this image does offer a useful window into their lives and from a behavioural point of view it’s interesting to see just how relaxed they look in mid-flight.」12月1日 0時03分
