Sneezing might sound cute but it can be the first indication of something more serious. Sneezing should never be dismissed for seasonal allergies or environmental irritant especially if it’s frequent & lasts more than a day. This was in the middle of the night after Thanksgiving cleanup when everyone else was in bed. Venus had sneezed a couple times throughout the day but with all the chaos & her appetite being normal we did exactly that..dismissed it for some type of irritant with all the cooking & cleaning. We know a lot but certainly make mistakes & miss things too so it’s important for us to show humility & share those with you for awareness.
Our last post shows me doing an analysis to check the color of her gums, eyes, nose, reaction to trying to provoke play, & the color/condition of her eyes. I knew from that little assessment something was off & checking her food bowl (another thing to always be aware of), confirmed it. Her appetite was down too & she felt warm. So, in the very early morning hours of Black Friday I took her to the after hours emergency center Tater Tot @totally_tater was just at last week with obstipation. It was confirmed that she had a fever & was likely suffering from a URI (upper respiratory infection). Our best guess is Tater brought home a “souvenir” even though he isn’t symptomatic. URIs are extremely contagious & Venus missed him so much she ran right to him & probably groomed him.
She is improving with the help of being in our bathroom with a humidifier and an antibiotic due to elevated WBC. She’s also quarantined so we can try to avoid cross contamination to the other cats.
When caught & treated early this is usually not serious but it can be. Always be in tune with what is & isn’t normal with your pets & make sure to seek medical attention if something seems off. You can never be too careful as cats are masters at disguising discomfort & pain. Thankfully, she couldn’t disguise the sneezing. Because of that, she’s being treated & should be good as new in no time!
