Members of Minford High School’s class of 2000 were freshmen the year Purdue Pharma introduced OxyContin. By senior year, painkillers were everywhere — in classrooms, school bathrooms and parties. And a decade later, their county, Scioto County, had become ground zero for Ohio’s opioid crisis. “I told myself I was never going to do them,” one member of the class said. “But kids were selling Oxys at school for $3 a pill.” Of the 110 students, nearly 50 spoke to @nationaldan about what life has been like since graduation. 3 have died from drug use, at least 15 have struggled with addiction, and a vast majority have family members who are addicted or in recovery.
