Today, a changing climate brings unpredictable weather and with it, unreliable ice. Natural, clear “black" ice is a rare phenomenon. So it was a joyous moment when a cold snap froze the glacial-tilled waters of this Canadian lake recently, something locals said they hadn’t seen in decades. This frozen turquoise wonder creaked and groaned and even rippled in places, creating lightsaber-like sounds that echoed off the mountains around us. Figure skater Laura Kottlowski (pictured) is experienced in checking ice thickness for skating safety—she documents the diminishing thickness of high mountain lake ice around the world as a way to record climate patterns and change.
