We're here for the cozy cosmos! In this @nasachandraxray image, two groups of galaxies rush together and produce warmth.
Most galaxies don't exist in isolation. They're bound to other galaxies through gravity — either in relatively small numbers known as “galaxy groups” or larger concentrations called “galaxy clusters” consisting of hundreds or thousands of galaxies.
The system of galaxies is called NGC 6338, located about 380 million light-years from Earth, with a mass within about 100 trillion times the mass of the Sun. In this composite image, X-ray data from Chandra in red shows hot gas with temperatures upward of about 20 million degrees Celsius. Cooler gas detected with Chandra and @europeanspaceagency's XMM-Newton is shown in blue. Optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey shows galaxies and stars in white.
