This is “the wall” we’ve heard so much talk about. It’s important to learn for ourselves, if we’re able. I went with @tahirihjustice to witness & ask questions.

Juárez, Mexico - Inspired by the strength of people I met struggling to protect themselves & their families from violence. One man lived in US for 22 yrs working construction, literally building property here. He left the country, later tried to return & was kidnapped in Mexico. (There is a unique violence migrants face who are forced to remain in Mexico.) He heard his captors sharpening knives when he ran for his life, which he only had the courage to do bc he faced death. We were able to laugh about this. It was just as crazy to him as it was to me. He used to live in Chicago. Now, in Juárez, in a crumbling shelter beautiful for the bright souls it contains but not a permanent home.

El Paso, Texas - people detained on US soil face prison conditions, but they have no sentence. No timeline. There is no criminal penalty for entering the country—it’s a civil penalty. Very different, and technical. It begs the question Why? & for a serious examination of the history of racism in our country. Do we accept the labels given to others we don’t know? Are we learning for ourselves? I want to explore this & other questions TMRW ON INSTAGRAM LIVE 2pm EST, speaking w/ a lawyer, advocate & friend who knows this work inside & out. There is no easy answer and it is important that we understand better what’s happening on the borders of our own country.
