Malaysia's deforestation rate is one of the fastest in the world. I wondered how Malaysia calculates its forest cover, and I recently spoke to conservation biologist Adam Kamal, who explained: "The percentages given are often based on land status and not actual ground cover; timber rubber plantations can actually be considered as permanent reserved forests.” The estimated forest cover today is between 50% and 55%; the UN FAO has noted that these estimates include palm plantations. Kamal believes the current forest cover is lower than the quoted figure. The official estimates are “inaccurate," he says. "Forests in Malaysia have been under extreme anthropogenic pressure. Most forests that are left to be wild are in various states of degradedness, none of which function or harbor the same communities of organisms that were historically there prior to disturbance. In some secondary forest sheer biodiversity is actually higher, but the species reflected in this heightened biodiversity tend to be ruderal (weedy species) or common.” #naturereserve #deforestation #malaysia
