Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was a very shiny marketing tool.
Santa’s most famous reindeer got his start in 1939, when a writer for the Montgomery Ward department store used Rudolph in a promotion to boost profits during the holiday season. Robert May first created the story for his daughter, but the illustrated version—handed out for free to kids who went shopping with their parents—became hugely popular. May’s brother-in-law Johnny Marks wrote the hit song.
This is one of the original 1939 booklets, now at our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館.
