Starting 2020 feeling more excited and inspired than I’ve been in a while. Truthfully, I’ve found it very challenging moving away from competitive skating. While I knew it was what I wanted and the right decision for me, I’ve struggled to find my place in the world outside the rink. Following Sochi, I expected to stumble upon a new passion, goal and mission right away... I thought it would be easy (silly me) to find something to fill the part of me that training and competition had enveloped for most of my life. Not everyone is fortunate enough to find his/her passion at just five-years-old, but if you’re one of those people, you know you’ve got some large boots to fill after that “first love” is gone. I certainly don’t have it all figured out, yet… but my advice to anyone seeking direction would be to give yourself time. While the last six years haven’t always been easy, I’ve allowed myself to feel lost and uncomfortable A LOT. Through those moments and that discomfort, I feel I’ve grown and gotten to know myself better. I find it’s quite easy to impart “wisdom“ and to share your lessons learned with others, but infinitely more difficult to allow one’s self that same grace in his/her own life. Show yourself some love, give yourself time, and know that sometimes being “lost” is exactly where you need to be.
