This spiral galaxy has a tangled legend. 👸 ✨ 🔱⁣ ⁣ This glistening galaxy is located in the constellation Coma Berenice (Berenice's Hair), the only modern constellation to be named in honor of a real person. The story goes that Queen Berenice II of Egypt (3rd century BCE) vowed to sacrifice locks of her hair to the gods to ensure her husband Ptolemy III's safe return from battle. Upon his homecoming, she fulfilled her promise and cut off her long tresses and placed them in goddess Aphrodite's temple. But the next day they went missing. The court astronomer explained to the furious queen and king that Aphrodite was so pleased with the sacrifice that she scattered Berenice's tresses in the heavens, pointing their eyes to a fuzzy patch in the sky about 45 million light-years away.⁣ ⁣Credit: @NASAHubble/@esa/I.
