Thick blankets of smoke engulf southeastern Australia as a record-setting fire season grips the nation.
Drought conditions have already primed many regions for unusually high and intense fire activity this year. This image was acquired on Jan. 4, 2020, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on our Aqua satellite.
