I wanted to take the new year to appeal to the entrepreneurs and investors who follow me by sharing this recent talk I did @myblockchance in Germany: ⁣
Philanthropy through Opportunity.⁣
⁣
In my culture giving back to society is considered a duty. I watched my parents doing charitable work since before I learned the meaning of the word ‘charity’. ⁣
An old saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. In my speech I share the example of realizing that the old model of philanthropy and charity can be successfully changed.⁣

However the onus falls on the current generation of philanthropists to think differently about making an impact. We need to question ourselves - is writing checks and feeling good the only thing we can do?⁣
⁣
As successful businessmen our money is not our most valuable asset, our most valuable asset is our mindset & ability to solve problems. ⁣
⁣
We are currently living in the best of times for entrepreneurial philanthropy. The power of various technologies has never existed before in human history. So expanding new ideas is easier & more socially impactful than ever before. All we have to do is to use the gift of technology and innovation, and if you don’t have time to do it yourself go find a startup that you can fund. ⁣
All we have to do as philanthropists is realizing that by funding traditional charities we can provide temporary comfort to the needy, however, by redirecting our donations towards ideas & startups we would be establishing employment opportunities and social systems where people in need can lift themselves up out of tragic situations. ⁣

There isn’t any better method to change someone’s life than to make them self dependent.⁣
⁣
In my view the core concept of philanthropy is not donating money, it's about solving problems, about introducing a change, about improving the social conditions around us.⁣
