Growing up as a girl who was leaky as a faucet, incapable of holding in or evading or pretending, I did not have many examples of artistic excellence and rigor to hold up to the frustrated people around me. Elizabeth Wurtzel was that example, along with Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton, Maya Angelou and ‪Fiona Apple‬ and Margaret  Cho and Elaine Stritch. “It was just very interesting to me” she said “that certain types of women inspire people's imagination, and all of them were very difficult women.” .. We have started, culturally, to praise fiery women but that can often mean a skilled and slightly pious kind of fire- a pushy teacher encouraging kids to fight for themselves, a politician who won’t be derailed by misogyny, Erin Brockovich. But what of the truly difficult women, the ones thorny enough that their lives become obstacle courses rife with obstructions of their own making? What of the women who waste your time and make it hard to love them? And what happens when they grow up? .. I didn’t always relate to Elizabeth. Sometimes she didn’t inspire empathy, and sometimes I judged her. That was the point. She didn’t care. What she did care about was making space for stories as complex as her own. ..
