DID SOMEONE SAY SOMETHING ABOUT A SUPER BOWL⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
☝️ But actually, not everyone thought this painting was all that super. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In fact, "The Titan's Goblet" by Thomas Cole—born #onthisday in 1801—was rejected by Cole's patron Luman Reed. With its massive, vegetation-encrusted goblet, it's certainly one of Cole's most enigmatic work and defies full explanation. ➡️ Swipe to zoom into the rim, where it gets even more curious—notice the classical ruins and boats! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Writer Theophilus Stringfellow Jr. described the goblet as a self-contained, microcosmic human world in the midst of vast nature, linking the stem and trunk to the Norse legend of the Tree of Life. Others have compared the fantastical forms to Italian architecture, geological formations, or the golden goblet of the sun-god Helios. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
However it’s interpreted, "The Titan's Goblet" echoes themes from Cole's other works of the period, illustrating the grandeur of the past, the passage of time, and the encroachment of nature.⁣⁣
