HOW I HAVE FOUGHT BABY BLUES
This mama definitely has some 2020 goals and I will accomplish them no matter how long it takes. Over the last 5 weeks, Ive definitely struggled and I now know why mamas can develop postpartum depression. There are days I haven’t showered or changed my outfit (hate to admit it but it’s true). There are days I prepared a meal and forgot to eat it because I became preoccupied with mom duties. Moments I found myself tearing up due to hormones, feeling overwhelmed or losing me time or any self care. I know I am susceptible to depression as I have had it before and when I saw the baby blues creep in, I knew I had to actively do things to help prevent it. Here are the things I found helped elevate my mood and energy:
1) SLEEP TRAIN BABY & TAKE SHIFTS. Dave and I alternate shifts so we each get 5-6 hour stretches at night. Aria is on a strict sleep train schedule that helps her sleep long stretches at night. 2) GET SUNLIGHT. Does of Vitamin D stimulate serotonin release and instantly elevate mood. Even artificial sunlight with UV rays such as red light can stimulate this same reaction. 3) SELF-CARE - each time I left Aria for nails or self care, I felt mom guilt but now I realize happy mommy helps baby be happier and well cared for. 4) WALK/HIKE/MOVE - I take baby on stroller daily, have gone on hikes or do small at home workouts to stimulate endorphins which also release natural serotonin to boost energy and mood. 5) PUMP 4x/day instead of every 2-3 hours. I had no time for myself and stimulating prolactin that many times a day can lower serotonin making mama feel isolated and weepy. Do what works best for you and baby for feeding and don’t feel guilty! Your feeding baby and that’s the best you can do! Be confident & happy with what you’re doing because you’re doing your best! Even through all the struggles, Aria is worth every moment and I feel so much stronger and confident having gone through them. 🙏🏽🥰👼🏼❤️
