He opened the door and greeted me, and I was immediately struck by his presence: I was standing in front of a real movie star. During the shoot, he had the enthusiasm of a 20 year old. Even though it was hard for him to stand for too long, he toughed it out. And he gave me the greatest advice, which I’m going to use. “Always listen to your actors, because they might have a great idea. You don’t have to use it, but just listen to them.” He has a passion for life and movies. It’s even apparent in the way he treats people he barely knows. After the shoot he gave me a big hug and walked me to the door. He stood there and waited until we were completely out of the driveway, waving the whole time. That will be my memory of Kirk Douglas.
