Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto | In the enormous trash chamber at Amager Bakke, in Copenhagen, two automated cranes move waste around a 36-meter-high (118-foot) silo that can hold approximately 22,000 tons of unsorted garbage.

Amager Bakke says it's the world's cleanest waste-to-energy plant. It burns through trash at a rate of 70 tons per hour, and Copenhagen must import rubbish from Britain and Germany to make up for the Danes' efficient recycling scheme, which leaves little for the landfill. The hope is to one day run out of waste: the plant also has been designed to be powered by biomass instead of trash.

As a photographer, my main focus is telling stories about our struggle to transition toward a more sustainable future. Can technologies like those at Amager Bakke help us solve our waste issue and point the way to a circular economy? Please follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to find out more about the solutions. #denmark #waste #energy #environment #lucalocatelliphoto
