Costa Smeralda is one of 5 new low environmental impact ships ordered by the Costa Group, the first cruise ships that are able to significantly reduce emissions thanks to the use of liquefied natural gas. These ships commit to a drastic reduction of plastics and elimination of single use plastics like straws,cups and plates, replacing them with other materials. All the ship’s daily water supply requirements are met by processing seawater directly on board in special desalination plants. Energy consumption is reduced to a minimum thanks to an intelligent energy management system. Waste is managed on board with 100% separate collection for recycling of plastic, paper, glass and aluminum, using an integrated approach aimed at implementation of circular economy projects. Also, there is a focus on food issues on Costa Smeralda, with the 4GOODFOOD program designed to reduce food wastage and to recover food surpluses for social betterment.
