#WorkoftheWeek: In 1960, Toshinobu Onosato reevaluated his approach to circles, beginning to fill them with rows of minuscule squares varying in color. Onosato believed that dividing the circles through “the piling up of colour planes” allowed for better understanding of the shape’s true dimensions. His hope was to capture brightness and harmony, and works such as “Painting A” (pictured) vibrate with an energy that relates to—but remains distinct from—the illusory effects sought by optical artists.
