An uncompromising and fearless Civil Rights activist, Baker continuously challenged the limitations placed on the Black community and especially on Black women. . Baker refused to perform in front of segregated audiences, pushing for integration in popular venues, demanded that her contracts contain a nondiscrimination clause, and frequently participated in demonstrations. After participating in the 1963 March on Washington, Baker was the only woman to officially speak alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. . In addition to being a trailblazer for racial equality, Josephine Baker was an international hero. During World War II, she worked as a French Resistance spy, collecting and smuggling information on German troop movements out of enemy territory by means of secret messages encoded in her sheet music (and sometimes even pinned to her underwear). For her valiant efforts, she was awarded two of France’s highest military honors. Upon her death in 1975, she became the first American woman to be buried in France with military honors, and over 20,000 people lined the streets of Paris to say their goodbyes. . In the face of overwhelming racial and gender-based discrimination, Josephine Baker held steadfast to her beliefs, remaining an outspoken activist and leader to the Black community and to the world.
