For Women’s day, I pick Katherine Johnson, the african american woman who’s equations helped get us to the moon.
A math prodigy from West Virginia who said she “counted everything” as a child — “the steps to the road, the steps up to church, the number of dishes and silverware I washed” — Mrs. Johnson was eventually hired by NASA as a “computer” (before machines took over this title and job.) She spent her early career studying plane crashes, until the Soviet satellite Sputnik sent the space race into full spiral.
Calculating the trajectory for an orbital flight to return safely to earth was the biggest challenge, as there had been fatally failed attempts. “I said let me do it,’ ” Mrs. Johnson recalls. “You tell me when and where you want it to land, and I’ll do it backwards and tell you when to take off.”
This paper marked the first time a woman wrote a technical report in NASA’s elite flight research division.
Hollywood has since tried to embellish her story, and had her running a mile to segregated bathrooms, but in reality she says she “never experienced discrimination, but that’s just me. I used whatever bathroom I wanted.” Clearly this was a woman who commanded respect.
