Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto | Standing watch day and night, these Basketmaker engravings have looked over the San Juan River in southern Utah for centuries. They are larger than life, and this panel wraps around a commanding cliff face. There are hundreds if not thousands of engravings. The Basketmakers (1500 B.C.E.-750 C.E.) flourished in the Southwest for over a thousand years. The culture spans the introduction of corn from Mesoamerica and the adoption of the bow and arrow. One of the most striking remnants of that culture are rock art panels scattered through the Four Corners region. There are of course thousands of Native American descendants still in the area today for whom this panel is not just beautiful art but also a direct record of their history. This panel is part of the much reduced Bears Ears National Monument and one of the first images I made for my nonprofit @ancientartarchive. We share and preserve humanity’s oldest stories, follow me @salvarezphoto and @ancientartarchive for more. #visitwithrespect #standwithbearsears
