We didn’t sing pop songs, but rather the slow music that might make you fall asleep. For me, though, it was exhilarating. I still remember the feeling of that ringing in my chest when all the parts clicked together – a brief transcendent experience, full of excitement and joy. I don’t sing anymore, but I still find that feeling sometimes when I hear part of a favorite song, or when I discover a hidden universe in a dewdrop that is about to succumb to the pull of gravity. • It sometimes seems comical that I get lost in a 1-foot by 1-foot plot of earth when a grand vista looms just behind it. It’s like listening to just a single note from a long song. Some might say that to break a composition into its building blocks is to lose the essence of the piece.
