Obviously this is an uncertain and scary time for all of us. We’ve never been through this. We’ve never had to practice social distancing or shelter in place. We’ve never been apprehensive about something as mundane and necessary as going to the grocery store. We’ve never had to worry about a loved one — a grandparent, a parent or God forbid a child — dying from a virus.

But this is where we are.

I’ve been thinking about my past life, when I was training for the Olympics. As the 2004 summer games in Greece got closer, I felt pretty isolated at times. It was the most selfish I’ve ever been. My life was training for the one thing I had dreamed about since being a little girl. At the same time, I remember vividly my coach having to have a “come to Jesus” with me about six months before the Olympics. Every-day distractions in my life were starting to get in the way of what I had been training for my whole life. I had just turned 16, gotten my driver’s license and my first car, and I was ready to go and test my newfound freedom! But what was the priority? Was it extra time at the mall and staying up late on the weekends? Or was being 100% focused when I was in the gym the priority? It was being focused at the gym, as tempting as it was to goof off and stay up late with friends.

As a high-performing athlete who wanted to win a gold medal, I had to remember what my end goal was and in turn do what I knew needed to be done to achieve it. That’s where we are now as a society. We all have the rest of our lives to have dinners with friends, take vacations, go to happy hour and socialize. Right now it is our duty to do what is right. It is our responsibility to practice social distancing and do whatever is being asking of us. We must take this seriously.
