Well, it’s been 10 days since this photo was taken of my last session in La Capella, the last day before the lock down went into effect here Spain. Looking at it today I have the bizarre sensation that it was from a past life or a dream...Things have changed so much in the world since that day that rock climbing objectives seem to have dissolved entirely from day to day thoughts, following the massive paradigm shift in our lives with COVID-19 controlling the worlds future. Ever since we first heard of the outbreak here in Europe we have been living on edge. @alizee_dufraisse ‘s father Phillipe has been with us here since mid February and has a rare auto-immune disease which puts him at extremely high risk to almost all viruses, but particularly this one. We quickly went to massive lengths to avoid exposure and transmission of any type of illness starting the moment we learned it had arrived in EU, considering how unquantifiable the virus seemed at the time. Our daily discussion’s about how we could send our projects this season morphed into long debates about how we could continue climbing the way we normally do considering the grave reality of this disease, and how without any control in place in our community, we could actually protect Phillipe. Friends at the crag seemed fatigued and uninterested by our paranoid perspective of the situation. The more we followed the progression and severity of what Italy was experiencing, the more we feared our daily activities and interactions. Climbing quickly ceased to be priority as our minds wandered towards all of the what-ifs that were about to occur. We began to ponder what would happen to us as a family, and how we could remain together. A few weeks later the State of Emergency went into effect here in Spain and all of our questions were answered. We will remain here until this storm passes, and do whatever we can to help our local community. I want to thank everyone who is fighting to save lives and risking their own, and encourage everyone to be conscious of those who may loose their lives if they are exposed. I worry for my family, friends, and everyone on earth 😢 Lets defeat this Virus together 🙌🏻❤️🙌🏻
