It’s rumored Ring Around The Rosie was a children’s song with encoded lyrics about the Black Plague. One of the symptoms was red (rosy) splotches with rings around them. The pocket full of posies was carried to cover the smell of rotting corpses. Then “ashes, ashes, we all fall down” would naturally refer to the plague killing over a third of the entire population of Europe, at a rate you couldn’t cremate fast enough. The smell of smoke and sulphur permeated every village. However this nursery rhyme was not published until 1800, so either it was passed down orally or this interpretation of the plague is reading a bit too deeply into it. Either way, it’s definitely creepy! 💀💐🔥
