This week we lost one of the nicest, smartest, most creative, fearless, versatile and subversive filmmakers of all time: Stuart Gordon. From the moment I first met him in 2002 (this photo is from a Masters of Horror dinner in 2006) he was so unbelievably warm and gave the most amazing heartfelt advice. Re-Animator was a defining movie for me as a director in that he did what I did not know was even possible. Monty Python gore in a transgressive Horror film. Just when Horror was dying he gave it a shot of Re-Animator fluid to the heart. Stuart was kind enough to appear on History of Horror when we praised his work. I look back at this photo and I can’t believe Stuart and Tobe are gone, hopefully they’re together somewhere in the afterlife making mischief and having a laugh pushing everyone’s buttons.
