They say don’t meet your idols but it should say don’t meet your idols until they made the best horror films of all time. This week we lost one of the nicest, smartest, most creative, fearless, versatile and subversive filmmakers of all time: Stuart Gordon. From the moment I first met him in 2002 (this photo is from a Masters of Horror dinner in 2006) he was so unbelievably warm and gave the most amazing heartfelt advice. Re-Animator was a defining movie for me as a director in that he did what I did not know was even possible. Monty Python gore in a transgressive Horror film. Just when Horror was dying he gave it a shot of Re-Animator fluid to the heart. Stuart was kind enough to appear on History of Horror when we praised his work. I look back at this photo and I can’t believe Stuart and Tobe are gone, hopefully they’re together somewhere in the afterlife making mischief and having a laugh pushing everyone’s buttons. We will miss him dearly. RIP Stuart.
