At first, as always, there is a shard of hope that they would walk out of the mountains, tousled and sunburnt.  For the families the pain echos with the loss of potential. Death out of sequence isn’t meant to be. For loved ones the future is taken away. Lost in a miasma of grief, they accept the weight and pick up the pieces. For partners of this deadly game, the reckoning that the value proposition of a life in the mountains has gone awry hits hard. We stumble with justifications that just don’t hold water. You wish your shoes were switched.  Jess will forever be the practical joker, radiant and exuberant, always willing to stand up for the underdog. Hansjörg, thin nimble and humble, climbed with the heritage of centuries of alpine living. This was his life. David combined the precision of his mother Claudia and the stamina of his father Rinzi. Coming of age as sport climbing transitioned from crag to comp he was as smooth as he was strong.
