Have you ever wanted to have a traditional artisan teach you their craft? You can do just this in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, which is well-known for its lacquerware. The lacquerware-making process is split into 3 parts. First, a woodcarver carves the shape. Next, a painter coats the item in layers of lacquer. Finally, an artist decorates the top layer and gives it a final coat. These photos are from when I made my own lacquerware chopsticks, which involved filing down the top layers of coloured lacquer, to create a design of my choosing. We were taught by Yoshii san, who is famous locally for the Kinmushikui-design of his work. Kinmushikui can be translated as “as if moths have eaten through gold” 🙈
