Of course, that didn’t happen. But we’re still asking: how can we transform now? Very grateful to @vogue @nnadibynature @okjanelle and @sarahjanespellings for giving a shout out to all the hours @madeleinewallace @annetheresegennari @kat.hoelk @sofilovita @dinahw123 @paradis_winslet @helenshenderson @natalielud @catilinwooters @branadane @iamkouka @drewwjoness @kayelitaylor @hannah_utah @chu_tube @ingaerla @sigruneva put in and to the necessary idea that when we rebuild our industry we rebuild with those same values: the right to a livable future & good jobs. How wildly everything changed when our survival was on the line. And how strange, because our survival was on the line before coronavirus came. The UN’s scientific body said we needed to peak emissions this year and halve them in the next decade if we wanted a chance at a habitable earth. Before the pandemic: our industry was on a crash course. Rampant consumption and an endless growth model weren't going to even last us a decade. Treating people and the planet as disposable, as cheap resources from which to extract profit, could not sustain life on this planet. The horrific violent impacts of this business model are too profound and multigenerational to make sense of in a statistic or sentence. Now we must grieve, and then, let us honor all the loss by making meaning out of tragedy. As Arundhati Roy wrote, “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us.
