Been spotting pics people have been posting from #NorthernExposure. With an abundance of time I’ve been free to reminisce. I feel so blessed to have been a part of this unique show that depicted a benevolent universe and to have worked with the extraordinary individuals who brought it to life. One of the aspects I’m most proud of is the journey that Joel Fleischman took. I remember arguing with Josh Brand, one of the creators, about how Joel would change over time. Josh was emphatic that if we did 100 episodes, Joel would be exactly the same on the 100th as he was on the pilot show. He was adamant that people don’t change. I felt diametrically the opposite. I didn’t understand what the point would be if a character doesn’t change, as I don’t understand the point of life if a person doesn’t change. Josh left after 66 episodes, we made another 49 and the remaining writers were in alignment with the notion of seeing Joel ‘becoming’. When Joel is mythically transported back to his beloved New York, he was not the same. He had grown and was a more complex and evolved character. The picture epitomizes his odyssey for me.
