On February 23, Ahmaud Arbery was jogging through his Georgia neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon when he was chased down in a truck by a father and son who shot and killed him in broad daylight.
Greg McMichael, the father who helped kill Ahmaud with his son Travis, worked until his retirement as an investigator in the local district attorney's office--the same office with initial control over the case. Even though the District Attorney had a video of the entire pursuit and fatal attack of Ahmaud, the investigation consisted almost entirely of an interview of McMichael who was not deemed a suspect, but a "witness." No arrests or charges were made.
That a 25-year old unarmed black man was ambushed and killed on a Sunday afternoon by white men who were never even arrested did not make news. The only reason we’re talking about this now is because the video showing the men executing Ahmaud-which the prosecutors had for months-is now on the internet.
This is the horrifying history, and devastating reality, of America.
Due to unrelenting pressure and skillful organization of black leaders, the local district attorney has finally requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigations lead the investigation.
It's progress, but just the beginning. Here are 2 things you can do today:
First, Contact Gov. Kemp's office (404) 656-1776 with 3 demands:
1) Justice for Ahmaud, including the immediate arrest of Greg and Travis McMichael and any accomplices (those in the 2nd truck pursuing Ahmaud). .
2) The GBI take full control of the case from local authorities, with an exhaustive investigation and appropriate charges.
3) The launch of an investigation into police & prosecutorial misconduct within the Glynn County police dept & the Waycross District Attorney's Office.

Second, Call the GA field office of the FBI and demand they investigate: (770) 216-3000.

Lastly, do not share the video of Ahmaud’s execution. Black women & men should not be forced to continuously endure the trauma of watching black bodies destroyed for us to finally collectively acknowledge and dismantle a system of white supremacist violence.
