In our kitchen, two drawers under the silverware drawer to the left of the sink, was one full of aprons. Some plain and utilitarian others full of ruffles and flower prints. On special Sundays after church still in her dress, my mother would pull out one of the fancier ones and get to cooking. With six children and much to do my mother dressed most usually in the plainer aprons. On Sunday she would get dressed up and put on one of the ruffled aprons and wear her pearls. It was like she turned into someone else. On Sundays I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. My mother loves May because it’s also the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother. I can only imagine the conversations she had with The Queen of May on the days her large brood must have been overwhelming and trying her patience to the max. In May there are processions to the church with special hymns and bouquets of flowers. A crown of blossoms is placed on the head of a statute of Mary at the end. It was a huge honor to be chosen to make a crown and I remember my mother helping me make a delicate and lovely one of Babies-breath the time I was chosen. My mother’s choice of flowers are humble like she is, those in the crown and her favorite, daisies. So today I think of all these things and wish that I could be with her. In this time I will have to make do with a phone call. I’ll wear my version of an apron, wear pearls, grab a flower and salute the woman who gave me such wonderful memories and shows me everyday now what it means to be strong and optimistic.
