I’m hiding in their bedroom on my 2nd cup of coffee and my 1st moment of peace. The bathroom is no longer a place I can rely on for alone time. I’ve learned to negotiate like a Supreme Court lawyer before even being fully conscious, I can use the LEGO term Brick Master with authority, I have Harry Potter’d and Willy Wonka’d and Spiderman’d like a Olympic champion. I’ve lost at Candy land umpteen times and screamed about the amount of pee on the toilet seat even more. I have kissed boo boos and cooked meals I’m proud of and then defiantly refused to cook ever again and ordered delivery. I have failed horribly only to show back up full force then check out again a few minutes later. I have laughed so hard I’ve cried, then cried for no good reason. I’ve written some of it down because I want to make sure I don’t forget these perfectly imperfect moments. The early morning gratitude lists, new freckles and grown up teeth. Laying on the grass in the sun trying to drum up kid answers to grown up questions I cant find the words for. Fucking up and being forgiven before I can forgive myself. Being endlessly messy and complicated and annoying. This quarantine edition of motherhood and family life is as emotionally kaleidoscopic and multi layered as a cake at a quinceanera. I have absolutely no fucking idea what I’m doing, but I’ve been entrusted with these two tiny heartbeats to keep safe so I keep getting back up again and baking a brand new cake with no recipe day after day, night after night. Upside down, sideways and still I’d choose to be called mom by these two tiny wild untamed humans.
