I had not done campaigns of that level before, Gianni Versace was the most famous designer, and I had not worked with someone like Madonna, so I was very surprised.⁣⁣ Shooting the campaign was funny as at the time I only worked in daylight and there were no daylight studios in Milan where the campaign was being shot. So, I found a disused building with large windows. Donatella was mortified by the prospect of taking Madonna to that place so she decorated it all bringing in furniture, curtains, flowers and scented candles. Later, when I presented the photos to Gianni, he said to me “I knew you understand clothes.”⁣ The campaign came out with a page saying ‘Photographed by Testino’. Only the Kings of photography were called by their surnames, such as Penn, Avedon, Newton… It was to be the beginning of a relationship that lasted a long time and created a whole new world for me. ⁣⁣ -⁣⁣ Un giorno agli inizi degli anni '90 ricevetti una telefonata da Madonna, che mi chiedeva di fotografarla per Versace. Non avevo fatto campagne di quel livello prima, Gianni Versace era il designer più famoso e io non avevo mai lavorato con qualcuno come Madonna, per questo restai veramente sorpreso. ⁣⁣ Lavorare alla campagna è stato divertente perché a quel tempo io scattavo solo con la luce naturale e non esistevano studi per quello a Milano dove la campagna doveva essere fatta. Così trovai un palazzo abbandonato con grandi finestre. Donatella era mortificata dall'idea di portare Madonna in quel posto, così decise di decorarlo con tende, fiori e candele profumate. Più tardi, quando mostrai le foto a Gianni, lui mi disse "Sapevo che avresti capito gli abiti."⁣⁣ La campagna uscì con una pagina che diceva 'fotografata da Testino'. Solo i re della fotografia erano chiamati con il cognome, come Penn, Avedon, Newton...
